About MEC

In 1971, four members of the University of British Columbia’s Varsity Outdoor Club had the idea of ​​a mountain-climbing chicken coop when they were stranded by a snow storm on Mount Baker, Washington state. They previously purchased equipment from REI in Seattle. Other members of the Varsity Outdoor Club joined the plan, and MEC was formed. The organization was formed under the British Columbia Cooperative Associations Act with a constitution originally written by co-founder Jim Byers.
